IT has provided the opportunities for governments to remodel the entire process of tax collection over the last decade. It is, however, a continuously evolving process and governments the world over need to constantly upgrade their tax systems to optimise their revenue workflows.
A recent SAP study confirmed that those organisations which adopt best practices in the areas of scope and adoption, process standardisation, technology and customer governance, do perform better, and do so as their best practice maturity increases.
The advent of social media has seen governments hopping onto the bandwagon in a bid to further engage citizens.

Brunei’s Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) hosted Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC) and more than 20 other MSC status companies from Malaysia for a two day meeting. This is the second time the event has been held, with an earlier gathering in March 2007.
In attendance were AITI’s Chief Executive Pg Hj Mohd Zain Pg Hj Abd Razak and Dato’ Mohd Badlisham Ghazali, the Chief Executive and Senior Officer of MDEC.
The opening ceremony’s 100 guests also included members of the ICT Federation of Brunei (IFB), Malaysia and Brunei captains of the ICT industry, senior government officers from both countries, as well as heads of ICT businesses and education providers.
In his speech, Pg Hj Mohd Zain mentioned that the ICT industry plays a very important role in the national economic development of many countries, particularly towards achieving a more knowledge-based economy. He said that the e-government initiative being implemented over the next few years is the single biggest IT project in Brunei.
He continued by explaining that the development of Brunei’s ICT industry will be further boosted by government efforts to involve international technology companies in partnership with local providers, thereby leading to the development of talent in the country as well as the two-way transfer of IP.
The large Malaysian delegation and the high-profile MDEC teams in Brunei were taken as a clear demonstration of the importance of e-government and ICT tie-ups between the two countries.
In addition, a representative from the Prime Minister’s Office gave a presentation entitled ‘Developments of the E-government in Brunei Darussalam and its Future Plan’. This was followed by a presentation on MSC Malaysia and e-Government by a Senior Manager of MDEC’s Socio-Economic Development Division Puan Gayah Gulam Haidar.
