The Ministry of Communication and IT has set up 10,000 common service centre (CSC) throughout the country as part of its commitment to introduce e-governance on a massive scale.
Each CSC offers web-enabled services such as application forms, certificates, and utility payments for electricity, telephone, and water.
It is hoped that mobile connectivity will improve government service delivery in rural areas. Of the 131 million new mobile connections made last year, 50 per cent were from rural India.
According to Sachin Pilot, Minister of Communication and IT, mobile connections are expected to double to 800 million, with majority of growth from remote places.
