Tax and Revenue Management: A government’s lifeblood

IT has provided the opportunities for governments to remodel the entire process of tax collection over the last decade. It is, however, a continuously evolving process and governments the world over need to constantly upgrade their tax systems to optimise their revenue workflows.

Taiwanese hackers create fake govt web site

Hackers in Taiwan have exploited the turmoil caused by last week’s typhoons by creating a fake home page for the web site of the Central Personnel Administration (CPA), the government department responsible for advising citizens on whether or not conditions are safe enough to go to work or school.

The bogus page advised the Taiwanese public that schools would be shut in the northern, eastern and central regions of the country.

The CPA has passed the matter on to the police. The hackers could be held accountable for “forgery and alteration of official documents” and get up to seven years in prison.

The CPA set up a special web page (to be found at www.cpa.gov.tw) to give Taiwanese information on areas affected by the typhoon, which struck the country last Friday (August 7). The correct information the CPA had wanted to give out was that the situation had returned to normal and people could continue to go to school and work.
