Singapore citizens to get road info on mobile phones

All traffic and road information will eventually be made available to citizens in real-time via mobile phone, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) chief executive Yam Ah Mee has said.

Yam said that technology was key to demystifying the city-state’s “dense but well orchestrated” transport system, and citizens should be given as much information as possible to ensure they make the right transport choices.

Singapore’s roads are controlled by the Intelligent Transport Systems Centre (ITSC). Launched in 1991, ITCS is operated through a network of sensors, cameras, GPRS systems and leased lines to gauge traffic speeds, jams and accidents.

A giant colour-coded screen informs operators if speeds drops below 20 kmph (red) or 40 kmph (green). When the system detects an accident a red alert will flash on one of the monitors, and the nearest surveillance camera will zoom in on the affected area.

Singapore’s high-tech transport system enabled Formula 1 crowds to be dispersed within 90 minutes of the race finishing, compared to the global average of three hours.

The World Economic Forum ranks Singapore as the world’s third most sophisticated road network, behind France and Switzerland.
