A recent study by an environmental non-governmental organisation has highlighted the inadequacies of Britain’s green government strategy initiated a year ago.
A year has passed since the launch of the Greening Government ICT Strategy, yet 60 per cent of 150 public sector information communications technology managers surveyed were not aware of the strategy.
Forty-one per cent of national government respondents were not aware of the strategy even though it specifically covers their area of activity.
Even among those who were aware of the strategy, 67 per cent were “concerned” or “extremely concerned” that the targets would be difficult to achieve, according to the study by Global Action Plan.
Only 13 per cent of respondents calculate the carbon footprint of their ICT activities and 22 per cent have set internal green ICT targets.
Tom Watson, then Minister for Transformational Government, launched the green strategy in July 2008. It aims to achieve carbon neutrality for all central government office estates by 2012, with the overarching commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 per cent by 2050.
