Public sector organisations are often expected to take the lead in environmental sustainability. With tightening budgets and rising energy costs, green initiatives are seen as critical, if not necessary. And it is not just for branding reasons. Green initiatives can reap much desired cost savings in a challenging economic climate.
IDC‘s most recent Asia/Pacific Green Poll, 2008, shows that peripherals rank high on the green agenda of IT executives. In fact, 32% of the 582 respondents identified peripherals as having the second most negative impact on the environment, after PC hardware.
As an industry pioneer in environmental responsibility, HP makes it easy for organisations to reduce their environmental impact and save costs. In fact, some of its HP Eco Solutions measures to help green the printing infrastructure involve zero investments to start saving costs immediately.
Reduce Paper
Use Setting default duplex printing across the printing environment can potentially reduce annual paper costs by at least 30%. For networked printers, this can be set automatically for the entire fleet by HP Web Jetadmin and HP Universal Print Driver. User-authentication solutions – such as PIN, Private or Pull Printing – can further reduce paper wastage while improving security. In addition, organizations can adopt HP’s Smart Web Printing for users to select and combined information from multiple web pages before printing.
Conserve Energy
Organisations can save costs by choosing ENERGY STAR® qualified products. HP shipped more than 25 million ENERGY STAR® imaging and printing products in 2008, more than any other vendor. All HP’s printing devices carry “HP Eco Highlights” labels, listing their energy-efficiency attributes, on their packaging. HP LaserJet printers also feature the Instant-on Technology for 50 percent energy savings over traditional fusing. The HP Officejet 8500 All-in-One Printer, for example, can save up to 50% on energy over other color lasers in the market. For further cost savings, the HP Web Jetadmin can be used to put printing devices on the network to sleep on weekday nights and weekends.
Digitise Paper-Based Workflows
HP can help public sector organisations automate their paper-based workflows. By capturing and delivering documents digitally, organizations virtually eliminate the need for faxing, thus lowering the amount of paper used. In fact, customers of the HP Output Management Solution have reduced the need for printed pages by between 18% and 70%, amounting to millions of pages in savings. And when printing collaterals, organisations can reap a further 20% to 30% of savings on waste and storage costs with short-run on-demand digital printing, which outputs only the quantities they need.
Understand Your Carbon Footprint
HP Carbon Footprint Calculator allows IT managers to compare the carbon footprint of their existing printer fleet to that of a new, optimised fleet to understand how they can reduce their environmental impact. Recent updates to the calculator make it even more user-friendly to analyse, save and track the data over time. Another tool, the HP Green IT Action Plan takes IT managers step-by-step through developing a plan to reduce the environmental impact of office printing while saving money and increasing productivity.
Recycle
HP Planet Partners program provides a convenient way to recycle used computer and printing hardware and HP original printing supplies in an environmentally responsible manner in more than 50 countries, regions and territories world-wide. HP’s closed-loop inkjet recycling process, an industry first, allows recycled plastic from empty cartridges to be used in the manufacture of new cartridges. More than 400 million new inkjet cartridges have been manufactured and sold using this process. And if employees are resistant to change, HP even offers a Change Management Kit to help the organisation’s leaders communicate with employees when introducing environmental best practices in the office!
