Malaysian state wirelessly connects public services
The Malaysian state government of Terengganu has announced the completion of phase one of the Broadband Wireless Network Project (BWNP), which is part of the state’s e-government initiative, T-eG (Terengganu e-government).
As part of T-eG, the local government has planned to use wireless infrastructure to connect all government offices to improve its service offerings for the public and increase service efficiency.
T@WAN, which stands for Terengganu Wireless Area Network, is a collaboration between the state government and InfiNet Wireless. The state government has envisioned a state where ICT will be widely used by its citizens and plans to use T@WAN as a cornerstone to developing a knowledge-based economy.
Che Abd Rani bin Mohd (pictured), the Director of Terengganu State Information Management Unit, said that the T@WAN initiative is expected to help the state government to save hundreds of thousands of Ringgit, besides improving communications and work efficiency.
Besides interconnecting the government offices in the state, T@WAN also connects mosques, religious centers and state community centers, and provides free internet access for the community. Working with the State Department of the Ministry of Education, T@WAN also offers internet connectivity to schools as part of an e-learning initiative.
Che Rani also said that the State Government ICT blueprint involves having the T@WAN infrastructure to support projects such as e-farm, e-siswazah, Bank Idea Terengganu and multimedia animation as part of economic development plans to generate more foreign investment into the State.
The Project involves the design and construction of a wireless infrastructure that stretches the entire state, from the north in Besut to the south in Kemaman. Using high capacity radio equipment from InfiNet Wireless, Nuinfra Consolidated Sdn Bhd completed the project in 11 months.
