The Hong Kong Government will step up its recruitment exercise and hire 6300 people over a one year period starting from now.
This was announced by the Secretary for the Civil Service Denise Yue Chung-yee, who told the legislators that 1400 positions have been filled so far.
As the downturn continues to hit the job market, Hong Kong’s unemployment rate has risen to five per cent in the three months ending February, according to the figure released by the Census and Statistics Department.
This is a sharp rise from 4.6 per cent in November-to-January period and the highest in three years. Around 171,900 people are unemployeed in the territory.
The government believes the unemployment rate will go up further in the near term. In the annual budget announced in February, the government proposed to spend HK$1.6 billion to create 62,000 employment and internship opportunities.
