A survey has revealed that 67 per cent of Asia’s eight to 24 year-olds are concerned about the effects of climate change, however 13 per cent of young Malaysians said they do not believe that the climate is changing.
Also less environmentally conscious were youths in India (only 38 per cent said they were worried about the effects of climate change) and Indonesia (14 per cent).
By contrast the survey, by market research firm Synovate, found that 87 per cent of youngsters in the Philippines, a country ravaged by the knock-on effects of global warming, were concerned about the effects of climate change.
The next most worried were Thais (81 per cent), then Hong Kongers (78 per cent), and Koreans (75 per cent).
The survey also revealed that young Asians have taken steps to reduce the effects of climate change. Thirty-eight per cent said they had recycled waste and reduced the consumption of plastic bags, electricity, water and gas; while 26 per cent of those surveyed purchase green products.
This survey was conducted across 12 Asian countries: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
