Singapore will set up 100 hot spots with computers and Internet services for senior citizens to use for free.
This will form part of the new three year programme to get the elderly more involved in the information age. The programme will be undertaken by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) staring from January 2010.
The announcement was made by Real Admiral Lui Tuck Yew, Singapore’s Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts at a ministerial dialogue session.
Lui revealed that that internet training will also be available for the elderly, in addition of computers for them to practise their skills.
The island state has been very active in making IT accessible to senior citizens. Four Silver Infocomm Junctions (SIJS), facilities where the elderly are trained in IT skills, are available to senior citizens of the A further four are expected to open their doors next year.
Earlier this year, a local council created a dedicated web portal dedicated web portal www.inotold.com to provide the elderly with social platforms, games and information.
Exact locations of the hot spots have not been decided yet. But the authorities expect them to be closer to the community than SIJS. Proposed locations include community centres and clan association buildings.
