Tax and Revenue Management: A government’s lifeblood

IT has provided the opportunities for governments to remodel the entire process of tax collection over the last decade. It is, however, a continuously evolving process and governments the world over need to constantly upgrade their tax systems to optimise their revenue workflows.

Unlocking Public Value

A recent SAP study confirmed that those organisations which adopt best practices in the areas of scope and adoption, process standardisation, technology and customer governance, do perform better, and do so as their best practice maturity increases.

Governments and Socialising

The advent of social media has seen governments hopping onto the bandwagon in a bid to further engage citizens.

E-learning campus connects students

Temasek Polytechnic (TP), iEcopolis and LG Electronics Singapore last week (11 Aug 2010) signed a Memorandum of Understanding that kick-started an initiative to develop the Polytechnic’s i-Digital Campus. In an interview with FutureGov, TP’s Mr Lim Chong Jin and Dr Yin Choon Meng (pictured) revealed the opportunities the partnership would bring to the campus’ 15,000 student population.

The $8 million (US$5,879,482) project will take place over the next five years. TP hopes to fuse iEcopolis’ eco-intelligent infrastructure solutions and LG’s business technology innovations to create a Future Campus e-learning environment.

The exciting part about the i-Digital Campus is that it creates an ideal environment for inter-disciplinary interaction, said Mr Lim, Deputy Director of Projects and Capability Development, Temasek Design School. “We are very mindful of the concept of Digital Connected Technology. While it is important that we have the skills and capability to enable technology, it is equally important for the different schools in TP to come together and leverage technology for education and to encourage innovation.”

This is where the Interactive Digital and Media Collaboratory (IDMC) – TP’s vision to integrate the expertise of its six schools – comes in. “The Informatics & IT school would focus on developing areas related to virtual space and gaming, for example, the engineering schools on autostereo-type expertise like visual simulation and 3D, the design schools on high-definition productions, the business schools on broadcast and media and so on,” said Mr Lim.

One such initiative is the Living Lab, said Dr Yin, Course Manager, Info-Communications, Temasek Engineering School, where different schools can “work together, integrate and innovate on industry-driven initiatives through a test bed environment”.

However, the primary focus of the i-Digital Campus should still be to enhance the learning experience, said Mr Lim. At the end of the day, all schools seek engagement from their students and interactive media will provide the platform for an “anywhere, anytime type of learning”.

To facilitate this, the IT School has come up with the Future Classroom, where lessons can be streamed to students. There will also be an Experimental Kindergarten (EK) featuring e-books and gesture-based learning – all of which are aimed at harnessing the potential of IDM to engage students in learning, said Mr Lim.

An upcoming project would be to transform TP’s Visitor’s Centre, both Mr Lim and Dr Yin said. “We are going to convert the centre into an interactive experience,” said Mr Lim. “There will be larger-than-life signages that are installed with proximity sensors, for example. When you stand close to the screen, these signs will sense your movement and play a message.”

Incorporating these installations will not only make the experience more interesting, but solve problems of data congestion. “The real advantage of technology is that it allows you to update and maintain information. Looking at the milestones of TP, a 20-year old campus, and how much more it is going to achieve in 50 years, technology will enable us to either play back or add on history,” he said.
