IT has provided the opportunities for governments to remodel the entire process of tax collection over the last decade. It is, however, a continuously evolving process and governments the world over need to constantly upgrade their tax systems to optimise their revenue workflows.
A recent SAP study confirmed that those organisations which adopt best practices in the areas of scope and adoption, process standardisation, technology and customer governance, do perform better, and do so as their best practice maturity increases.
The advent of social media has seen governments hopping onto the bandwagon in a bid to further engage citizens.

Government modernisers from South Korea and Europe urged delegates at the FutureGov Forum Singapore today (Wednesday 27, 2010) to be bold in embracing social media and open information as ways to help solve society’s problems. Dr Jung-hee Song, Assistant Mayor for IT and Chief Information Officer, Seoul Metropolitan Government, pointed to her organisation’s e-poll initiative as a way the Korean capital monitors and responds to complaints from its citizens.
“We field the complaint, verify the citizen’s identity then collect the information to form a more accurate view of public opinion. It’s crucial that government remains open to feedback through a variety of channels, which is why we launched an IPTV and mobile channel,” said Dr Song.
“It is our mission to improve the quality of peoples’ lives through ICT and enhance the brand value of Seoul with an IT governance system. Social media is a powerful method we use to reach these goals,” she added.
Matt Poelmans, Director, Citizenlink, Ministry of the Interior, Government of The Netherlands, said that governments are not doing enough to involve citizens in policymaking, and social media should be used to give citizens the opportunity to solve society’s problems.
Poelmans used Petities.nl, an online petition system, as an example of how social media can be used to better understand citizen grievances and improve policymaking. “The citizen is not just a customer. He is the master of government and should be given the opportunity to help government solve problems,” he said.
Harish Pillay, Open Source Evangelist at Red Hat Asia Pacific, went one step further, urging governments in Asia to make more government information available to the public.
“Like it or not, tech-savvy citizens will find ways to mash up any data for their own purposes. This poses huge opportunities for government. You can end up with innovations and ideas you would never have thought of otherwise,” said Pillay.
“I challenge all of you to give your citizens unrestricted access to data,” he added. “All data should be made open and available by default.”

The most recent dream i had was about a girl who was showing me her bedroom but it didn't look like a bedroom..there were a load of stands that i think you would use for painting & they were all pushed together to make a big table with a white table cloth over it.
We both walked over to her four windows which were just my height (5ft8inch) and ran along one wall..outside i could see the sea & it looked really beautiful but it was too far away to get to & there were islands on either side of the sea for some distance until the sea just kept going on by itself & i couldn't see any further.
In the dream i recognised the girl but i didn't know her…she had jet black hair & like a bob that came just below her chin & she was a tiny bit smaller than me.
it really bugs me that i don't know where i was, why i was there & why this stranger was showing me her bedroom that didn't look like a bedroom..can you please give me an explanation?
it's been annoying me for weeks!
