IT has provided the opportunities for governments to remodel the entire process of tax collection over the last decade. It is, however, a continuously evolving process and governments the world over need to constantly upgrade their tax systems to optimise their revenue workflows.
A recent SAP study confirmed that those organisations which adopt best practices in the areas of scope and adoption, process standardisation, technology and customer governance, do perform better, and do so as their best practice maturity increases.
The advent of social media has seen governments hopping onto the bandwagon in a bid to further engage citizens.

Guangzhou is investing RMB100 million (US$15 million) annually in new technologies as part of a plan to develop into a ‘smart’ city. The ‘Intelligent Guangzhou’ project will see ‘internet of things’ applications designed, manufactured and deployed across the city - China’s third largest - with a major roll-out expected by 2013.
As well as deliver greater connectivity, the project aims to develop local industry, with 500 major companies expected to launch off the back of the initiative, generating around RMB50 billion (US$7.4 billion) in industry value.
One of the chief advisors of ‘Intelligent Guangzhou’ is Dr Zhou Hongren, Executive Vice Chairman of the Advisory Committee for State Informatisation, responsible for the development of information systems for the Chinese central government.
“Innovation in ICT is one of the most valuable ways of boosting competitiveness and local industry,” said Zhou.
Dr Zhou Hongren is a guest speaker at the FutureGov Summit in Kota Kinabalu, which will be held from 13-15th October 2010.
