Tax and Revenue Management: A government’s lifeblood

IT has provided the opportunities for governments to remodel the entire process of tax collection over the last decade. It is, however, a continuously evolving process and governments the world over need to constantly upgrade their tax systems to optimise their revenue workflows.

Unlocking Public Value

A recent SAP study confirmed that those organisations which adopt best practices in the areas of scope and adoption, process standardisation, technology and customer governance, do perform better, and do so as their best practice maturity increases.

Governments and Socialising

The advent of social media has seen governments hopping onto the bandwagon in a bid to further engage citizens.

Facebook warns govt users on privacy

More than 2000 Facebook pages are used by 35 federal agencies in the United States. Many more government agencies in Asia are now on Facebook, amassing millions of fans. But government Facebookers should be mindful of privacy issues when archiving content, a Facebook spokesman has cautioned in an interview with FutureGov.

“Facebook pages and the content posted on them are public under the ‘everyone’ setting, as is made clear in our privacy policy,” said Andrew Noyes (pictured), Facebook’s Manager of Public Policy Communications. “If user content is going to be archived, we recommend that pages that do this post a clear disclaimer on their page.”

Government agencies should consult their legal departments to see what kind of archiving is required, to ensure that their archiving does not violate privacy collection rules - for instance, the names of users who leave comments, he said.

Facebook enables basic archiving of content via an RSS feed of items posted by the page. “Also, governments can use Facebook platform APIs add applications to suit specific archiving needs whereby they can present users’ status updates to them in creative ways that follow their privacy settings,” Noyes added.

More specialised archiving tools could be in the pipeline, he revealed. “Facebook has made available the APIs to allow archiving of page content and several third-party developers are working on developing products for this,” he said.

The world’s most popular social network, which has almost 500 million users, has been subject to recent criticism over exposed user data and limits to users’ control over privacy settings. According to a global Sophos survey of 1588 Facebook users this month, 16 per cent claim to have already stopped using Facebook because they feel they have inadequate control over their data.

High profile Asian government entities and officials with Facebook profiles include the Government of South Korea, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak, the Singapore Police Force, and Hong Kong Legislative Councillor (Information Technology) Dr Samson Tam.

It is nice to see that you are exposing what Facebook has been doing with it's members information. We have been going on about this for a long time and yet people do not seem to be listening.

We formed www.faceaman… for this very reason, we were sick of our privacy being exploited for commercial gain and so we setup our own site where privacy is taken very seriously.

Have you ever tried to delete your facebook account? It takes 14 days and if you login during the 14 days the request to delete is automatically cancelled. Facebook does not have members, it has prisoners!
