Singapore govt promotes data centre energy efficiency

The government of Singapore is continuously fostering sustainability in its ICT sector by promoting energy efficiency measures for data centres.

In a recent speech by Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts of Singapore, he highlighted two green initiatives jointly developed by the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore, other government agencies and the ICT industry for the reduction of related costs and environmental impact of the ICT sector.

The first initiative is the Singapore Standard for Green Data Centres, launched in March 31 this year, through the collaboration between IDA, IT Standards Committee and SPRING Singapore.

The Singapore Standard for Green Data Centres aids data centres in setting systems, processes and policies to enhance energy efficiency. Government and private organisations may apply for certification after passing the Standard.

According to Yew, currently, a pilot batch of companies, including Keppel Datahub, the National Library Board and SingTel, have received a certification

The second initiative is the upcoming BCA-IDA Green Mark for Data Centres, to be established by the IDA and the Building Construction Authority (BCA). It will be implemented next year.

BCA-IDA Green Mark for Data Centres will be a rating system that will enable data centres to analyse and compare energy efficiency and green features against each other.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage all other data centres to incorporate sustainable development initiatives as well as to adopt the green standards in energy efficiency,” said Minister Lui Tuck Yew.
