Indonesian province to go paperless

A province in Indonesia has put plans in the works to make it the country’s first paperless administration.

The government of East Java government will slash all budget allocations for paper, transmitting its data and communications electronically starting next year.

Sudjono, head of the Communications and Information Technology Office of East Java, said the move to paperless administration will make the province more environmentally friendly by reducing waste brought by government functions.

“This should help create good savings and there will no longer be so much wasted paper,” he said. “This will also help environmental programs involving sustainable forestry.”

Sudjono added that the plans will enhance the administration’s efficiency through faster correspondence and information delivery.

“The hope is that by doing this, performance will become more effective since correspondence will no longer involve paper documents,” he said.

In line with its move to paperless administration, the Communications and Information Technology Office of East Java has recently launched a telecentre that handles the province’s information and technology services electronically and educates citizens about the internet, as well as a specialised media centre.

Sudjono said the service provided by the telecentre has been popular with the public.

“It has already been used by so many groups, there are women’s organizations, youth and student groups, among others,” he said.

This initiative falls under that of the central government’s, which urges the employment of electronic services among government agencies nationwide. Regional administrations have been assigned to create websites for the provisions of services and the procurement of public contracts.
