Apart from enhancing the overall look of the page, the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s website is now available in four languages, namely: English , Chinese (simplified and traditional ) and Japanese .
In addition, the website now boasts of its new Content Delivery Network, which will accelerate the loading speed of the website from 22 seconds to 6.7 seconds in the United States, 27 seconds to 11 seconds in China, and 6 seconds to 3.7 seconds in Japan, thus enabling users to literally view the contents the moment they click on them.
The Government has also established a system that will allow users to see updated contents on the website in real-time as it is loaded on social networking sites, and link these content with its foreign language promotion channels such as Facebook and blogs.
Prior to the revamping of its website, the Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted a survey of about 100 non-korean speakers. Results on the survey indicated that even if english translation is available, non-korean speakers still preferred to view information in their own language.
The Government expects that the reshuffled websites that cater to the characteristics of different languages will enable web users of the respective languages to acquire diverse information on Seoul easily and conveniently, and will allow the city to conduct targeted marketing campaigns, in which the Government can figure out foreigners’ needs and proactively highlight contents that will be useful to them.
Official tourism statistics show a consistent upward trend of foreign tourists in South Korea. Foreign tourist arrivals exceeded 7 million, with Japanese tourists accounting nearly 40 per cent or 2.75 million, followed by Chinese tourists at 1.22 million, and Americans at 550,000.
Early this year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government also upgraded the city’s GIS portal to better support the growing number of foreign tourists and students in Seoul.
