The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) has recently announced a national cyber security strategy, established with the joint effort of fifteen government agencies.
According to KCC, Cyberspace will be considered another operational domain like the nation`s territories on land, air and sea that needs a state-level defence system.
Under the master plan, the National Cyber Security Centre, run by the National Intelligence Service, the country’s spy agency, will serve as the control tower to coordinate efforts against cyber attacks among government agencies.
The KCC, along with the defence and home affairs ministries, will be tasked respectively with private sector security, national defence and protecting the safety of the government`s computer system. Government agencies and private enterprises will be required to encrypt and back-up important data, and install necessary software to prevent hacker attacks.
The country`s national cyber security will focus mostly on defence. Its efforts will be divided into preventing, detecting and responding to cyber assaults, rather than making pre-emptive offensive moves. Involved parties are still deliberating on detailed action plans for their respective duties, which are expected to be put in place by the end of this month.
