It had launched an amnesty programme for illegal migrants under the codename 6P to help them register and legalise themselves before the Home Ministry’s massive crackdown begins in November.

The government will register illegal migrants using a biometric fingerprinting system. They may or may not get the permission to continue living and working in Malaysia. They will, however, not be punished for having worked in the country illegally.

It will help the country cut down the number of illegal migrants. The exercise is also aimed at curbing the crime rate and biometric identities will ensure that those deported owing to a criminal background will not be able to return with a different identity. Malaysia has conducted such drives in the past but many deported migrants were found to be back in the country with different identities.

Registration counters have been set up across the country to facilitate the registration of such workers.

In a statement last week Home Ministry senior deputy secretary-general (Registration and Immigration) Datuk Alwi Ibrahim said 530,625 illegal immigrants were registered at 206 Immigration offices throughout Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah in a week’s time beginning 1 August.
