Taiwan govt recommends biometric passports to citizens

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) urged Taiwan passport holders on Friday (9 December 2011) to change their passports to biometric ones for easier visa waiver privileges in countries around the world.

MOFA said that the e-passport had already played an important role in obtaining visa-waiver status in the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union.

Althought 3.88 million biometric passports have been issued since December 2008, the number only accounts for 35 per cent of all valid Republic of China (Taiwan) passports in circulation. All Taiwanese biometric passports already conform to the International Civil Aviation Organization standards.

Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Jason Yuan, said that Taiwan had already met US criteria for visa waiver candidacy with its biometric passports.
