NZ App virtually reconstructs pre-quake city

Staff and students from the University of Canterbury (UC) have developed a free “augmented reality” smartphone app called CityViewAR that allows users to see Christchurch city as it was before the earthquake.

The app, available for Andriod and iPhone systems, allows users roaming the streets to view actual-sized virtual reconstructions of buildings superimposed onto the city’s landscape.

The human interface technology laboratory in UC used hundreds of 3D models of the city’s buildings - mostly from within the central business district. In a demonstration earlier this month, the lab demonstrated how 3D models were frequently built using 2D photographs that were patched together.

The app also shows photographs and historically interesting facts about individual buildings, which were provided by the Christchurch City Council and Historic Places Trust.

According to the developers, the app in the future will allow for data to be collected from residents and channeled to city planners and architects, who can use that information for reconstruction projects.
