The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will be embarking on a Disaster Risk Exposure Assessment and Mitigation Project (DREAM) in an effort to address and mitigate the effects of natural disasters in the country
According to DOST Undersecretary Graciano Yumul, DREAM is a micro mapping project that will utilize the LIDAR technology to get a picture of the ground to produce 3D maps. He added the project will prioritize the 16 river basins in the country and urban areas prone to flooding.
LIDAR is an acronym for LIght Detection And Ranging, is a powerful tool used by experts to study and investigate the atmosphere with high spatial and temporal resolution that can cover large geospatial areas.
With LIDAR, experts can accurately measure distance, speed, rotation, and chemical composition and concentration of a remote target such as a clearly defined object or a diffused object. Yumul revealed that President Aquino has approved the project’s budget of Php 1.6 billion (USD 37 million).
The two-year project will be implemented by the University of the Philippines.
