The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) will be expanding the use of their geohazard mapping in several provinces in the Philippines in an effort to pinpoint areas susceptible to landslides, floods, and erosion.
The target locations of the geohazard mapping are the towns of Itogon, Tublay, Mankayan and Atok in Benguet, Kiangan and Lagawe in Ifugao, Bontoc in Mt. Province, and Pilar in Abra.
MGB Regional Director Orlando Pineda said they have already provided local government units with land susceptibility maps, which may be used during calamities.
According to Pineda, the bureau chose the towns based on the number of residents, which may be affected by geohazards located in their towns.
Meanwhile, the bureau has also urged local government units to prepare evacuation plans and warning systems to mitigate the effects of heavy rains or flooding in the coming months.
Aside from the eight towns, the bureau also identified 50 barangays which may be susceptible to landslides. Pineda urged the residents in geohazard sites identified by the bureau to coordinate with their respective local government units during times of heavy rains.
