The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Steven Joyce, has just recently launched the government’s official cyber security strategy which aims to improve New Zealand’s protection against growing cyber threats.
The New Zealand Cyber Security Strategy builds on existing government and non-government efforts to improve New Zealand’s cyber security and highlights three priority areas; increasing awareness and online security, protecting government systems and information, and incident response and planning.
“The Strategy reflects the fact that an improved New Zealand cyber security response is a shared responsibility. In developing this Strategy, the Government has sought input from a wide range of stakeholders across government, industry, non-government organisations and academia,” Hon Steven Joyce said in a statement.
In addition, the government will work in close partnership with industry, non-government organisations, and critical national infrastructure providers and businesses to ensure initiatives outlined in the strategy are delivered in the most effective and efficient way.
“The actions contained in New Zealand’s Cyber Security Strategy will significantly improve New Zealand’s cyber security response and create a strong platform which we can build from to meet new cyber security challenges as they emerge,” says Hon. Joyce.
The Government has appointed the Ministry of Economic Development as the lead policy agency responsible for coordinating cyber security policy and implementing this Strategy. In addition, the Government will also establish a National Cyber Security Centre to help protect government agencies from sophisticated cyber attacks.
