The Australian Defence Force (ADF) launched earlier this year its Joint eHealth Data and Information System which will develop and implement an electronic health records system, designed to improve the quality of healthcare to all of the country’s defence forces.
The Joint eHealth Data and Information System (JeHDI) is a web based system which will simplify record management and provide immediate access to patients’ medical records and other healthcare information.
The JeHDI would improve the productivity of health care personnel, provide the ability to map health related trends and patterns, derive financial reports related to the provision of healthcare to ADF personnel, and maintain the security of health data.
Minister for Defence Science and Personnel and Indigenous Health, Hon. Warren Snowdown MP, said that the JeHDI would complement the Australian Government’s National eHealth Strategy, which has committed AU $466.7 million (US$466.7 million) to develop a Personally Controlled eHealth Records system which is set to be available from 2012-2013.
He further added that this initiative would be a very opportune time for ADF, as it takes a key national leadership role in the introduction of electronic health records in the country.
The Australian Department of Defence has made a substantial investment of more than AU $55.7 million (US $55.7 million) for the development and effective delivery of the JeHDI system over the next four years.
The JeHDI will be developed with Defence Oakton and CSC Australia. The latter being one of the world’s largest health systems integrator, has been selected as the prime systems integrator to deliver the JeHDI system.
The JeHDI system will be developed through a staged process and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2014.
