The Malaysian government is already working on formulating an enabling policy and act that would encourage the use of geospatial information in government ministries and the whole country as well.
According to Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the geospatial act would focus on data confidentiality and security, the principles of custodianship, information sharing, data integration, and geospatial data standards.
Muhyiddin added that the act was needed to optimise the potential benefits of geospatial information technologies. The aim of the geospatial information act is to manage geospatial information as an invaluable asset in supporting the national development initiatives.
In addition, it would also help in the development of GIS infrastructure and human capital development to support the growth of GIS in Malaysia.
The minister also revealed that the formulation of the proposed geospatial policy and act had already been started by the National Mapping and Spatial Data Committee.
He further added that being the prime geospatial information provider in the country, the role of the department is to provide the mapping data and cadastral maps needed by other government agencies involved in development projects, such as basic infrastructure for rural areas and public transportation infrastructure.
