In a recent speech at the Malacanang Presidential Palace, President Benigno Aquino III announced that the pilot-testing of the National Farmers’ Registry System (NFRS) will be launched in the provinces of Quezon, Leyte, and Bukidnon using Geographic Information System (GIS)
According to the President, the system will be used for “precision agriculture”, wherein the government will collect information regarding farmers, including crops that they plant so that the government can come up with a comprehensive plan for them.
The NFRS aims to establish a reliable data of farmers and farmlands so that the delivery of agricultural programs and services by the Department of Agriculture and other government agencies could be accessed by and/or timely delivered to the intended farmer clientele.
NFRS will be linked to a unified GIS, a reliable and comprehensive database for agriculture and fisheries, which is intended not only to address existing data gaps, but most importantly, to improve support services to farmers.
The President further added that after the pilot-testing in the three provinces, the government will implement the program nationwide.
