Singapore provides mobile alerts on dengue clusters

As part of the government’s initiative to give the public real-time access to relevant information on dengue, the National Environment Authority in partnership with Smart Communities Pte Ltd., launched yesterday an online tool called x-Dengue, where users can subscribe to receive text message alerts on new areas of dengue transmission.

By simply subscribing to the website, registered users can receive text message alerts on new dengue clusters in areas of concern to them, such as their homes, schools and other places they frequent.

Users can indicate their points of interest on the website, and should these areas be within a dengue cluster, users will be alerted via a text message. Armed with such information, users can be forewarned and take preventive measures against dengue, such as applying insect repellent. The system will also send text messages informing when clusters are closed and relevant tips on dengue prevention.

“The x-Dengue initiative is part of NEA’s efforts to enhance our public outreach efforts on dengue by providing useful, timely and relevant alerts and customised information on dengue clusters. NEA is also keen to leverage on new technologies and communication channels such as social media, and working in collaboration with interested partners, in the fight against dengue,” said Andrew Tan, Chief Executive Office of NEA, in an official statement.

Subscription to the service is free, with the cost of short message service during its six-month long trial period borne by Ericsson, M1, SingTel and StarHub as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.

Users can also determine nearby dengue clusters by downloading NEA’s new iPhone application from Apps store.
