The region’s first centre exclusively dedicated to training students in cyber-warfare and cybersecurity skills within a tertiary institute will start operations in April 2012, in partnership with e-Cop and Microsoft.
A Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and its industry partners at the CyberSecurity Asia conference on the 9th of November to formalise the setup.
According to Tan Hang Cheong, Principal, Singapore Polytechnic ,”The CCC will allow students a dedicated environment to co-operate on real-world cyber-security projects, granting them hands-on and market-relevant experience that will prepare them for the cyber-security landscape of tomorrow. SP will be launching a suite of new learning facilities called Cyber War-Games Centre (CWGC) for students in Diploma Infocomm Security Management course ,” he said.
The CWGC will train students in dealing with real world security scenarios such as intrusion detection, incident response, forensic analysis, and remedial actions to mitigate risks. According to Tan, “The CWGC pedagogy will reinforce the learning of effective teamwork and working under pressure, the key soft skills of security professionals in the industry.”
Within the centre are dedicated facilities to train students in three major areas: offensive attacks, defensive methods and investigative skills.
“We aim to create a realistic environment for our students to acquire the operational and technical engagement skills in responding to cyber-threats. At the core of this integrated and holistic approach is our belief in providing an immersive learning environment to our students,” Tan explained in his address.
The MOU also established the framework for research and development collaboration in ICT security projects between SP and e-Cop. According to the agreement, staff from SP will be attached to e-Cop on research and development projects, which Tan believes will provide them an opportunity to remain relevant and current in the Infocomm security domain.
The MOU is aligned with Singapore’s Infocomm Development Authority’s vision for 2015 to “propel the country to become a trusted hub for high-end IT services and a global infocomm city.”
