The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has made its first “Facebook arrest” after a netizen responded to SPF’s appeal for information on its Facebook page about an unsolved crime.
On 11 November 2011, a member of the public called the police hotline, saying he could identify the loan shark suspect from a photo posted on the SPF Facebook page since July 2009. The call has led to the arrest of two suspects.
Assistant Commissioner Ng Guat Ting, Director, of Public Affairs, SPF, said SPF is grateful to the member of the public for providing a “critical tip-off”.
“This is indeed public spiritedness in cyberspace. We are confident that more cases will be solved through this e-partnership with the community,” said Ng.
While investigations are still ongoing, this arrest thanks to SPF’s Facebook presence shows that the organisation is indeed reaching its goal of galvanising the online community into action, as FutureGov Asia Pacific reported on 9 September 2011.
