Police in Phoenix, the capital of Arizona state, US will soon be outfitted with US$500,000 video camera systems on their uniforms.
The funds come under a two-year Smart Policing grant from the US Department of Justice meant to let the Phoenix Police Department and Arizona State University (ASU) College of Public Programmes jointly examine the impact of technology on crime, public and police accountability, and satisfaction with the police.
“The technology that this grant will provide will enhance our officers’ ability to provide quality police service in keeping with the highest standards of the Phoenix Police Department,” said Joe Yahner, Acting Police Chief, Phoenix Police Department.
The grant follows 2010’s recommendation by the Community Engagement and Outreach Task Force that the Phoenix Police Department ran a pilot in which officers wear video cameras to improve the relationship between them and the public.
“By using this grant to purchase wearable cameras, the Phoenix Police Department has solidified their commitment to ensure that it maintains its status as one of the best police departments in the country,” said Jocquese Blackwell, Co-Chair of the Community Engagement and Outreach Task Force.
