In a bid to help people make smarter food choices, the Centre for Food Safety launched yesterday, a mobile nutrition calculator that aims to give people access to nutrition information on pre-packaged food anytime, anywhere.
The application, aptly called “NuCal”, enables people to set up their personal food database and search for their favourite pre-packaged food items.
After logging the amount of food consumed, the estimated levels of nutrient intake can be worked out. After inputting the amount of food consumed, the estimated levels of nutrient intake can be worked Users can then compare them with the upper limits of daily intake and make appropriate adjustments as necessary.
By saving their food intake history, users can check the levels of nutrient intake of different foods, making it easier to monitor their diet and choose a better selection of food which suits them and is good for their health.
“NuCal” is a mobile app version of the “Nutrition Label Widget” internet tool the Centre for Food Safety rolled out earlier to help promote the nutrition labeling scheme which is now in effect.
The application is available in traditional and simplified Chinese, and English. “NuCal” can be downloaded free of charge at the iTunes website or through the Hong Kong app store by using keywords such as “nucal”, “cfs”, or “nutrition calculator.
