Indian territory modernises land records

The Puducherry Administration has taken steps to implement a centrally sponsored National Land Records Modernisation Programme (NLRMP) in effort to modernise the management of land records, minimise the scope of land and property disputes, and enhance transparency in the land records maintenance system.

The NLRMP has the financial and technical support from the Department of Land Records – a organisation attached to the Rural Development Ministry.

The main objective of the NLRMP is to develop a modern, comprehensive and transparent land records management system and to implement a conclusive land-titling system with title guarantee.

Major components of the programme are the computerisation of land records, the digitisation of maps and integration of textual and spatial data, an update of all survey and settlement records including the creation of original cadastral records, the computerisation of registration and its integration with the land records maintenance system, and the development of Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and capacity building.
The Department of Revenue and Disaster Management has been designated as the nodal department to implement the NLRMP in the Union Territory.

The government has initiated these steps to complete the implementation of NLRMP in the Union Territory before 2016-2017.

The Lt Governor has also set up a State level monitoring and review committee for the implementation of the programme under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary.
