Singapore launches online language learning tool

Singapore Minister for Education, Heng Swee Keat, launched a new online learning tool for Chinese language yesterday, 8 September 2011, for primary students aged seven to nine. Called Oracy eLand portal, this online learning portal will be made available to all schools in late September, according to a Ministry of Education release.

Oracy eLand uses multimedia like flash animations, video clips and audio clips to make learning the Chinese language more engaging and interaction. Through the portal, students can learn commonly-used vocabulary and sentence patterns.

Lessons will revolve around daily-life themes such as ‘My school’, ‘My Neighbourhood’, ‘Food I like’, ‘Activities I Enjoy’. Tasks given in the portal will let students practise what they have learnt in different everyday contexts.

The Oracy eLand was piloted at three primary schools in the country in May 2011 and feedback from teachers showed that more than 80 per cent of the students liked using the portal and expressed increased confidence when conversing in the language.

According to Tan Shih Ray, Level Head of Chinese at Temasek Primary School, one of the schools involved in the pilot, the students have been “more responsive” with the portal as compared to normal classroom teaching methods.

The portal was developed in response to one of the key recommendations of the 2010 Mother Tongue Languages Review Committee, which was to use ICT to enhance learning and equipping students with vocabulary and sentence patterns that are commonly used.
