The Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) is introducing new communication digital systems such as the Mobile Card Acceptance Device (MCAD), long-range digital radios, computer-based police reporting system, and police report online checking system.
Datuk Zulkifi Abdullah, Director of Federal Logistics Department, RMP, said that the initial cost estimate for implementing and developing these systems was RM980 million (US$326 million), but the price “may increase for the plan to be executed nationwide”.
Right now, digital radios are only used by police in Greater Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru. In fact, digital radio was introduced only mid last year to replace RMP’s analogue radio communication system which only supported voice transfers and not data.
Right now, RMP is planning to extend its use to Sabah and Sarawak, two states on the separate island of Borneo, in early 2012.
MCAD allows police patrol officers to check personal details, vehicle data or past criminal records of suspicious characters they detain and will no longer have to contact headquarters for information.
Abdullah said that the new system has the ability to combine data and voices and lets police uses SMSes. He said the expansion will improve police communications to reduce crime rates in the country.
Police report online checking system was implemented on 1 August 2011 to let complainants of traffic, crime or civil cases check on the status, development or result of their police report online.
