The government of Malta is putting together a cloud computing strategy that will help improve government-citizen interactions.
According to Austin Gatt, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications, the time is right for Malta and the local ICT industry to have a clear strategy on cloud computing. The government has signed a strategic partnership with Microsoft Corporation consisting of a number of key initiatives over the next five years.
One of the main initiatives within the strategic agreement is the setting up of a Microsoft Innovation Centre (MIC) in Malta focused on cloud computing with a seed investment of over US$ 4.1 million (€3 million)..
“The setup of an innovation centre will be a critical enabler for the development of ICT competences in this technology and will nurture the development and proliferation of related solutions and services,” explained Gatt.
The government hopes the MIC, expected to be operational towards the end of 2012, will strategically position Malta at the forefront of cloud computing in the region.
