AUS Council launches location-based mobile apps

Paramatta Council, located in Western Sydney, recently launched two new mobile applications that enable users to track available parking lots, and the location of a community shuttle bus in real-time.

The parking app, known as Parra Smart Parking, will help people locate available parking slots with a simple tap of the phone. The application offers live navigation to available parking spaces and allows users to see up-to-the minute occupancy rates.

Meanwhile, the Para Shuttle Bus Tracker app is a convenient tool for commuters as it allows them to do real-time tracking of Parramatta’s free shuttle bus.

“I don’t think there’s any other government in Australia that has leveraged connective technologies like we have here in Parramatta,” said the Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid.

“Already, consumers are experiencing advanced mobile applications that make positive contributions to daily life,” he said.

“So it’s exciting that Parramatta is at the forefront of digital technology and deploying applications such as these, and finding smart ways to improve our urban life.”

With the applications in place, the Parramatta council said that it can significantly help in improving traffic management.

According to Frank Dorrian, Programme Manager for Parramatta’s Digital Concierge Programme, applications such as the Parra Smart Parking app will help identify capacity data trends, and will ensure the council can provide the necessary car parking spaces required for Sydney’s growing second central business district.

“It will also reduce Parramatta’s carbon footprint by minimising the amount of traffic congestion,” he said.

Parramatta’s focus on connective technologies is an initiative of the ParraConnect Advisory Committee, an on-going program that aims to help businesses, community groups, government stakeholders and residents.

The Parra Smart Parking and Parra Shuttle Bus Tracker application is available for download, free of charge, at the ParraConnect website .
