Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has launched a digital learning system allowing soldiers to access rich and interactive training materials independently and at their own pace.
The system, called Learnet, also contained online lectures and tutorials which soldiers can watch at any convenient time. It also contains an instant messaging feature, allowing trainees to chat with their commander and peers easily.
Officiating at the launch, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said that as the demographic of the SAF servicemen is changing, fewer soldiers are joining the army and thus each of them is expected to perform more.
The learning system, which is estimated to reduce classroom time by 10 per cent, yet allow soldiers to complete 30 per cent more modules, will create more time for outdoor and hands-on training.
The system, piloted since 2009 at selected sites, is now rolled out in phases to all training facilities of the SAF. The Defence Ministry has budget more than S$50 million (US$39 million) this year for different components of the project.
