Thailand revamps tax ID system

Taxpayers in Thailand can now use their identification number as tax ID number. In an effort to simplify the tax identification system and facilitate the use of single number, the Revenue Department announced that the RD will stop issuing tax ID cards.

Instead, individuals can use their 13-digit citizen ID number registered with the Department of Provincial Administration as tax ID number in relation to all tax filings. Likewise, companies registered with the Department of Business Development (DBD) can use their 13-digit company registration number as their corporate tax ID number. Foreign workers can continue to use the tax ID number issued by the RD.

The RD has been preparing to adopt this approach since 2008 by including 13-digit entry on their data system alongside its 10-digit system. Now, the RD will keep the previous system only for its internal use, and will fully operate all e-tax filings based on the new database system.

The change took place as part of the collaboration between the RD, the DBD, and the Office of Social Security to create an electronic starting business solution and increase the country’s competency. Apart from using a single number, they aimed to adopt a single form and single point solutions to facilitate and expedite the government e-services.
