Indian City to Install Biometric Attendance System

The Metropolitan Development Authority of the city of Chennai (CMDA) in India is installing a biometric workforce management system to control absenteeism of employees.

The CMDA is a statutory body responsible for the urban planning and development of Chennai.

Starting 1 March, all 800-odd employees of the CMDA will be required to scan their fingerprints at biometric attendance systems installed at all entrances to the office before entering. The device will recognise the employees’ identities and register their time of entrance and exit.

The system is propagated to increase the efficiency of the staff of the CMDA and avoid irregular attendance and erratic working hours of employees. A pilot test has already been carried out for this project.
