Malaysia appoints new Director General of Health

Datuk Dr Hasan bin Abdul Rahman has been appointed Director General at Malaysia’s Ministry of Health, taking over from from Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Haji Mohd Ismail Merican.


Prior to this appointment, Dr Hasan had served as the Deputy Director General (Public Health) at the Ministry, between 2007 and 2009, where he was in charge the Ministry’s Disease Control Division.

Dr Hasan holds a master’s degree in public health and a bachelor’s degree in medicine, both from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Dr Ismail Merican, whose tenure as Director General spanned over seven years, witnessed dramatic shift of challenges facing Malaysia. He was in the driving seat for the country’s health planning as well as the implementation of Total Hospital Information Systems, TeleHealth and personal health record projects.
