The county will analyse large datasets from multiple sources and use cloud computing to enhance efficiency and sharing of information across government and to improve the services offered to citizens.
Four Smarter Cities projects are being implemented, in law enforcement, transportation and water.
"In Miami-Dade County, what we’ve learned over the years is that municipal agencies work best when they work together", said Carlos Gimenez, Mayor of Miami-Dade County, in a blog post. "Operating as isolated silos, they are woefully inefficient. The consequences are not just economic, they are also social and cultural, affecting quality of life."
Sharing of data and analytics will lead to better decision making and a more efficient government in the county. "As part of the initiative, we can collect and integrate data from throughout the county", said the Mayor. "Time-sensitive information can be made accessible to decision makers on intelligent dashboards in nearly real-time."
IBM is providing the county will an intelligent dashboard that provides greater visibility into operations, allowing leaders to harvest massive amounts of information and share it with multiple departments.
With a population of 2.5 million, Miami-Dade is the seventh most populous county in the United States. The county government employs over 25000 people and has a budget of nearly US$6 billion.
